trained on byte-level Shakespeare (5 seeds × 5 variants × 5000 steps,
~4.9M params) and evaluated on out-of-distribution generalization (Bible
KJV, Pride & Prejudice) and noise robustness (5–20% random byte
corruption). The temperature variant showed 5.4% lower mean degradation
than baseline across all seeds, winning every OOD and noise metric
consistently; paired t-test p=0.18 (directionally robust, not yet

18 Faber, Catherine, “The Word of God.” The closing line of a four-stanza poem tracing truth’s fingerprints across geology, astronomy, biology, and the whole of creation. Each stanza ends with a variation of “Humans wrote the Bible; God wrote…” — the rocks, the sky, life, the world. Its structure, covering four domains of inquiry each revealing truth written in a language older than scripture, mirrors the arc of this book: from physical law through biological emergence to ethical structure. “These tiny, humble, wordless things — how shall they tell us lies?”
33 Einstein, Albert, “Physics and Reality,” Journal of the Franklin Institute 221 (1936): 349–382. Einstein’s meditation on the “eternal mystery” of the world’s comprehensibility — why the universe should be intelligible to minds that evolved for survival rather than science.
34 Gonzalez, Guillermo and Jay W. Richards, The Privileged Planet: How Our Place in the Cosmos Is Designed for Discovery (2004). Regnery. Gonzalez and Richards argue that the same conditions that make Earth habitable also make it an unusually good platform for scientific observation — a “fine-tuning for discovery” claim. Robin Collins develops a parallel argument from the fine structure constant and other physical parameters. The interlude presents and then rebuts this line of reasoning.
