Why centralized control fails as systems grow more complex
Stable Region (ατ < 1/e)
Unstable Region (ατ > 1/e)
Critical Threshold (ατ = 1/e ≈ 0.368)

Control Intensity × Feedback Delay must remain below this threshold for stability
Stable Zone
When the product of control intensity and feedback delay stays below ~0.368, the system can correct errors faster than they accumulate. Corrections arrive before conditions have changed too much. The system converges toward its target.
Unstable Zone
When the product exceeds ~0.368, the system cannot keep up. By the time corrections arrive, conditions have changed. Corrections overshoot, creating new errors. The system oscillates, then fails.
