Coordination by Invitation
No compulsion
The bioelectric wave provides a signal. The cell's own ion channels and gene networks do the work of responding. Differentiation is invited, not forced.
Distributed
No single cell generates the morphogenetic field. Every cell participates in maintaining it for its neighbors. The pattern is a commons.
Self-correcting
Bisect the embryo — each half regenerates a whole organism. The developmental program re-establishes itself from whatever medium remains.
Trust Attractor
Each cell trusts the signal. Each cell maintains it. The wave propagates because the medium is excitable; the medium stays excitable because the wave maintains the conditions.
Where the medium is excitable, the body builds itself.
