Entropic Gravity
Gravity as emergent from information and entropy
Drag the test particle to see entropy drive apparent gravity. Arrow keys also work.
Entropy Gradient
ΔS/Δr = 0.00 kB per unit r
Apparent Force
F = 0.00 units
Screen Temperature
T = 0.00 T0
F = T ΔS/Δr. The entropy gradient stays constant as the particle moves; the screen temperature carries the whole 1/r2 falloff, so the force tracks the temperature.
Central mass
Holographic screen
Test particle
Temperature: hot near M, cool far
In Verlinde's framework, gravity is not a force that acts across empty space. It is the statistical tendency of entropy to increase. A mass approaching a holographic screen changes the entropy, and that entropy gradient is what we experience as gravitational attraction. Gravity is thermodynamics in disguise.
