1 Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching (c. 6th century BCE), Chapter 29 (translation varies). The concept of wu wei—non-forcing action — is central to Taoist philosophy and anticipates modern insights about complex systems.

2 Rick Doblin, “Psychedelics: From 396 AD to 2070,” Long Now Foundation Seminar (2020). Doblin’s vision of licensed legalization emerged from forty years of work on MDMA-assisted therapy. The timeline he offers, medicalization by 2022 and licensed legalization by 2035, remains aspirational, but the structural insight stands: accountability beats prohibition.

3 MAPS therapeutic model as described in Doblin (2020). The phrase “inner healing intelligence” reflects Stan Grof’s influence on the MAPS approach. Grof’s observation that “psychedelics are to the study of the mind what the microscope is to biology and the telescope is to astronomy” shaped the organization’s founding vision.

4 Aldous Huxley, Island (1962). The novel’s destruction of the utopia by external forces reflects Huxley’s awareness, at the end of his life, that transformative practices cannot survive in isolated pockets. The modern version: no alignment lab can survive a misaligned world.

5 Charles C. Mann, The Wizard and the Prophet (2018). Norman Borlaug (Wizard) and William Vogt (Prophet) both addressed the population problem; both were wrong about the mechanism. The demographic transition literature confirms that female education is the single strongest predictor of fertility decline — stronger than income, urbanization, or contraception access alone.

6 Grassé, Pierre-Paul, “La reconstruction du nid et les coordinations interindividuelles chez Bellicositermes natalensis et Cubitermes sp.,” Insectes Sociaux 6 (1959): 41-80. Grassé coined the term stigmergy (from Greek stigma, mark, and ergon, work) to describe the indirect coordination mechanism by which termites build complex structures through traces left in the environment.

7 Nina Heppner, Sandra Reitmeier, Marjolein Heddes, et al., “Diurnal rhythmicity of infant fecal microbiota and metabolites: A randomized controlled interventional trial with infant formula,” Cell Host & Microbe 32(4) (2024): 573–587.e5. doi: 10.1016/j.chom.2024.02.015. A randomized trial of 210 newborns found that infant gut microbiota exhibit 24-hour oscillations as early as two weeks after birth. When infant microbes were cultured in continuous laboratory conditions without host cues, they maintained the circadian pattern independently — the first evidence that gut bacteria possess intrinsic circadian clocks. Research conducted at Technical University of Munich (Dirk Haller, senior author).

7a Tischer, D.K. and Weiner, O.D., “Light-based tuning of ligand half-life supports kinetic proofreading model of T cell signaling,” eLife 8 (2019): e42498; Yousefi, O.S. et al., “Optogenetic control shows that kinetic proofreading regulates the activity of the T cell receptor,” eLife 8 (2019): e42475. Both studies used optogenetic tools to control binding duration independently of all other biophysical variables, the first direct test of the kinetic proofreading hypothesis in T-cells.

Reece’s group at the University of Edinburgh demonstrated that the parasite’s developmental cycle is entrained to host circadian cues related to feeding, not simply to the light-dark cycle.

7c Edgar, R.S. et al., “Cell autonomous regulation of herpes and influenza virus infection by the circadian clock,” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 113(36) (2016): 10085–10090. The study showed that viral replication was tenfold greater in mice infected at the start of their rest period than at the start of their active period.

Van Creveld’s comparative analysis of military command structures documents how Auftragstaktik (Mission Command) outperformed Befehlstaktik (Detailed Command) in the Franco-Prussian War and subsequent conflicts, providing historical evidence for the control-theoretic limits of centralized coordination.

The key insight is that persuasion and indoctrination operate on the same mathematical objects (interpretation maps) but in opposite directions: persuasion may expand the space of the representable; indoctrination contracts it. Lyra notes the structural parallel to LoRA fine-tuning: both operate on the interpretation apparatus itself, reshaping what beliefs are representable rather than which are held.

14 Wolfram, S. (2026), “What Ultimately Is There? Metaphysics and the Ruliad,” Stephen Wolfram Writings. The 10-600 estimate derives from experiments with practical neural networks, where the fraction of parameter space spanned by recognisable human concepts is vanishingly small relative to possible configurations. Wolfram calls the vast remainder “interconcept space.” The figure is illustrative rather than exact, but characteristic of the combinatorial explosion in high-dimensional systems.

Six vulnerability classes identified in PostgreSQL/pgvector memory architectures, with autoprocessor injection and provenance blindness rated highest risk. Written from the first-person perspective of an AI examining its own cognitive infrastructure — itself evidence for the kind of self-reflective agency the Trust Attractor framework predicts.
